Surgical consultation

Surgeons and nurses assess clients with breast health problems and/or signs of breast cancer. Minor breast surgery can be done at our Centre by our surgeons. A treatment plan is recommended for newly diagnosed breast cancer clients. Information and education are given to help the client make the decision about their treatment.

If you have been referred to the Breast Health Centre to meet with a breast surgeon, a clerk from our scheduling department will contact you with an appointment.   They will schedule you to see one of the many surgeons that work in the Centre.  The surgeons work together with other health-care providers within the clinic setting, to help diagnose and treat your breast problem. When you come for your appointment, please bring in all the medications you are taking.

If you are diagnosed with breast cancer, you will meet with a surgeon to review the results of your diagnostic exams (mammogram, ultrasound) and biopsy results. During the appointment, the surgeon will talk about surgical treatment options and recommendations. It is beneficial for you to bring a support person to your appointment.  It can also be helpful to prepare questions before you meet with the surgeon.  A registered nurse will go over what to expect with breast surgery with you. Information and resources are offered to help you with your diagnosis and treatment.

Many patients find it helpful to go to one of the Before Surgery Information Sessions that we offer at the Centre.
